Antique Saroff Character Figure Doll Christopher Columbus.
Very charming Saroff character doll from the 1940s.
The detail is amazing!
In great condition except for a hairline crack repair on the back of the brim of his hat.
The head is hand painted over paper mache and painted cloth hands & legs that are attached to a solidly stuffed cloth torso over wire armature. The costume is extremely detailed!
Under base reads: this doll is an original SAROFF CHARACTER authentically designed and made entirely by hand.
A bit of history on these very collectible dolls:
Mr. Saroff was born in Russia, but fled his native country during the revolution in 1917. He may have served in the military or been related to the Royal Family. Mr. Saroff settled in the United States in Missouri and later became actively involved in the arts by producing operas and plays. He designed costumes for these events also and created dolls to display the costuming.
